How to Improve your Employees’ Potential
When individuals begin working at a new job; they want to give their best. They’re excited at the prospect of meeting new people and learning new skills. They want to use their talents to make a difference in the company and want to feel appreciated.
But most times, the worker’s expectations aren’t met and in a short time, they become unhappy, feel unfulfilled could even start looking for other jobs. As a manager, you should support and protect your employees’ desires to do an excellent job. When an employee starts to work for your organization, you must provide them with some training so that they’re not stranded in their new occupation. You should support and encourage them especially in their first two or three months. Your workers have different traits, abilities, and knowledge that they bring to your workplace. In addition, they have different needs so you must make customized plans for each individual for development and learning. You should help them to understand which career path to follow. You should consider providing your employees with distance learning classes besides sending them to training classes. You may also consider giving them short-term transfers to different departments, project work and so forth.
Most employees consider their supervisors as their mentors. As they work, they look to them for advice and guidance. They should learn from you the way to get things done. Know when to mentor and train your employees as they learn the ropes of your organization. When mentoring the employee, allow them to make their goals within some constraints that are specified. They should decide on the ways to use to achieve these goals. They get guidance from you on the way they might handle the challenges which they face along the way and on the available choices. Your job as their mentor is always to encourage and support them as they go along. You need to give your employee time as mentor, and you coach them. They also need to have some feedback and support from you as they learn and grow in the business.
You need to take time from the day’s work at last once per year and talk to your employees on a formal basis. You need to conduct performance appraisal interviews with them. These interviews usually cover three areas which are; measuring their progress against the goals of the previous year, new targets for the coming year and a review of their learning and development. You should give them some time to get ready so that you can get a genuine two-way dialogue.
